Your CIEE Semester Intern and Study Abroad program in London lasts 12 weeks and features three key components: a part-time internship with an international organization (approximately 20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and two elective courses taught by CIEE faculty. Housing & Meals

Housing

CIEE London offers a range of housing options, including residence halls or shared apartments, to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. All housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.

Standard Housing: Includes a compact double studio room at a student residence hall or a double room within a shared apartment. Shared apartments feature a kitchen, bathroom, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Residence halls boast common areas, a small kitchen, a shared bathroom, and laundry facilities. Housing is located under 45 minutes from CIEE London.

Select Housing: Includes a double studio room at a student residence hall, with an en-suite bathroom and a shared kitchen. The residence hall boasts common areas, study rooms, and laundry facilities shared with other students. The residence hall is located approximately 30 minutes from CIEE London. Select housing requires an additional fee.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees.

Meals

Meals are not included. Students prepare their own meals in their own kitchenette or the residence hall’s shared kitchen facilities. CIEE provides basic cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. There is also a wide range of restaurants and cafes located nearby.

CIEE London: Study in the Bloomsbury district, one of London’s most vibrant neighborhoods set in the academic and literary heart of the city. CIEE London features classrooms, a student lounge, a library, a study space, a student life office, an academic advising office, a café, and a garden terrace.

Participants will need a standard visitors visa. CIEE willl advise students as part of the early application process.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Requirements

All London Intern + Study Abroad students take the 6-credit part-time internship with the required embedded internship seminar plus two additional CIEE courses for a total of 12-14 semester credits.

CIEE Courses: 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours
CIEE Internship: 6 U.S. semester credits/9 quarter credits: 15 contact hours (45 total hours) of in-person and asynchronous online learning activities and 225-300 hours at the internship placement

Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The integrated academic course, which correlates with the internship, is taught primarily in an online learning environment to complement the internship experience. Students are expected to dress and behave professionally throughout their internship and are subject to the agreed-upon internship protocols arranged by CIEE and the host organization.

CIEE elective courses are taught in six-week blocks, so the pace is accelerated, and the workload can be demanding. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lectures and discussions with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation.

Class Format

Students participate in a part-time in-person internship and required academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment, featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work.

All courses are customized for and open only to CIEE students. Elective classes include a combination of lectures, group work, presentations, and discussions. To help ensure you are able to enroll in the courses you need, some courses may be facilitated as a Hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a Hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. However, regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location.

Grading

The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and mid-term and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
