Overview

When you study abroad in Copenhagen, you'll get the rare opportunity to experience the "hygge" way of life and learn why Danes are some of the happiest people in the world! Your time abroad will include learning more about Copenhagen's commitment to sustainability, from its urban green spaces to its hundreds of miles of bike lanes, swimmable harbors, and innovative architectural design. This former home of the Vikings is rich in history and culture and has made world news for its recent culinary revolution.

On this Open Campus Block program, you'll have the option to spend six, twelve or up to eighteen weeks experiencing all that this modern European city has to offer. From Copenhagen's cozy neighborhood vibes, to the colorful harbor of Nyhavn, and the hip, multicultural streets of Nørrebro, Denmark's capital city is full of vibrant and exciting landmarks. The city offers safe, clean public transportation, and most all Danes speak English, which makes finding your way around a breeze!

Your courses will be delivered in English by experienced and engaged faculty. While CIEE Copenhagen is a small study center, its modest size allows for a more intimate classroom environment and more personable connections among students and staff.

BUILD YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVENTURE

Designed for students who require a flexible study abroad experience, CIEE's Open Campus Block program was thoughtfully structured to be completely customizable. Select one, two, or three six-week blocks per term at any CIEE Open Campus Block location.

Your Destination

Copenhagen has transformed in the past decade, emerging as a "must-stop" destination in Europe. Fine dining, natural wines, and its reputation as an environmentally friendly city have earned Copenhagen top billing from foodies, oenophiles, students, and those seeking refuge in one of "the happiest countries in the world." Despite playing host to more than 600,000 residents, Copenhagen retains an old-world, small-village feel, with more bicycles than cars traveling its streets. In what's widely considered Europe's safest capital city, students discover an endless array of cultural activities, history, architecture, and more.

CIEE Copenhagen  is located in the city center – we like to say a 5 minute walk will take you to Nørreport station and get you to everywhere you want to go in the city. Being in the heart of the city, an array of shops and restaurants are also within walking distance of the Study Center. The center’s beautiful and very comfortable Lounge is where students love to work, hang out, people-watch - and take naps!

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Copenhagen.

Excursions & Activities

Ample activities and excursions will be offered to immerse you in Danish culture and historical heritage.

Students can experience Danish hygge in daily life. Hygge explains the Danish lifestyle that can be described as a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. Hygge can be a candle-lit dinner with family, friends, and like-minded people sitting around a table and having a lighthearted conversation.

Below are a list of places you may visit as a part of the program:

  • Take a trip to explore Hamlet’s Castle in Helsingør - just one of many castles harboring the stories of Scandinavia’s past.
  • Take an overnight trip to other parts of Denmark, and explore some of the unique landscape and visit one or more of the sites listed on UNESCO World Heritage list – like the Wadden Sea or Stevns Klint
  • Explore the National Museum and see how Copenhagen transformed from a 10th-century fishing village to a world leader in sustainability and innovation.
  • Take a short train trip across the bridge to Sweden and explore the young city of Malmø (half the population is under 35) with lots of cobblestone streets full of cafes and shops. Get on the train again and Visit Lund – home of a 12th – century Romanesque cathedral and one of the oldest and largest universities in Scandinavia.

Projects, Volunteer Opportunities, or Internships

Volunteering. Denmark has a rich tradition in volunteer activity, mainly through special interest groups (called “Foreninger”) or Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Students will be able to give back and create a deeper connection to Copenhagen by volunteering at select local organizations. Any program participant interested in volunteering should contact local staff for guidance.

Internships. Build new skills and intercultural competencies with a CIEE Academic Internship and become an active member of the local professional environment. Six-week internships are open to students participating in three blocks in Copenhagen.

Research. Pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent, local fieldwork.

Service-learning projects. Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need.

The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lectures, group work, and discussions with co-curricular excursions and activities. Courses taught at the CIEE Copenhagen are typically for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday and meet three times per week, although co-curricular activities or study trips may fall on a Friday or weekend. Attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas.  Some courses may be facilitated as a hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location.

Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Course Information

Course Notes

  • Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
  • Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
  • Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.

Hybrid Courses
Some CIEE courses are offered in hybrid format to make them available at multiple program locations and increase your course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. All students have the same instructor and meet as one class. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential and intercultural learning for all. The Course Comparison Tool shows the location of instruction for all classes and from what program locations the course can be taken. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”. Otherwise, the courses are offered at the one indicated location only.

Academic Projects

  • Each Academic Project (Internship, Service-Learning, Directed Independent Research) placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements. The process is highly individualized and goal oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
  • Students applying for an Academic Project are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.
  • Copenhagen students who wish to pursue an internship or service-learning must remain in Copenhagen for all three consecutive blocks in a semester due to local visa restrictions.
  • To qualify for participation, students must be in the location for at least one block in advance of the Academic Project to prepare for and secure placement. As a result, students participate in an Academic Project in either Block II or III.

Language Classes

  • No credit-bearing Danish language courses are available.
  • Students may add a non-credit “Survival Danish” course to their course load during the on-site orientation.
