Your Destination
Copenhagen has transformed in the past decade, emerging as a "must-stop" destination in Europe. Fine dining, natural wines, and its reputation as an environmentally friendly city have earned Copenhagen top billing from foodies, oenophiles, students, and those seeking refuge in one of "the happiest countries in the world." Despite playing host to more than 600,000 residents, Copenhagen retains an old-world, small-village feel, with more bicycles than cars traveling its streets. In what's widely considered Europe's safest capital city, students discover an endless array of cultural activities, history, architecture, and more.
CIEE Copenhagen is located in the city center – we like to say a 5 minute walk will take you to Nørreport station and get you to everywhere you want to go in the city. Being in the heart of the city, an array of shops and restaurants are also within walking distance of the Study Center. The center’s beautiful and very comfortable Lounge is where students love to work, hang out, people-watch - and take naps!
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Copenhagen.
The Culture
Excursions & Activities
Ample activities and excursions will be offered to immerse you in Danish culture and historical heritage.
Students can experience Danish hygge in daily life. Hygge explains the Danish lifestyle that can be described as a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. Hygge can be a candle-lit dinner with family, friends, and like-minded people sitting around a table and having a lighthearted conversation.
Below are a list of places you may visit as a part of the program:
- Take a trip to explore Hamlet’s Castle in Helsingør - just one of many castles harboring the stories of Scandinavia’s past.
- Take an overnight trip to other parts of Denmark, and explore some of the unique landscape and visit one or more of the sites listed on UNESCO World Heritage list – like the Wadden Sea or Stevns Klint
- Explore the National Museum and see how Copenhagen transformed from a 10th-century fishing village to a world leader in sustainability and innovation.
- Take a short train trip across the bridge to Sweden and explore the young city of Malmø (half the population is under 35) with lots of cobblestone streets full of cafes and shops. Get on the train again and Visit Lund – home of a 12th – century Romanesque cathedral and one of the oldest and largest universities in Scandinavia.

Housing & Meals
Housing
CIEE Copenhagen offers two different housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. Housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to efficient and clean public transportation, shops, cafés, grocery stores, and anything you’d need to live like a true Copenhagener.
Standard Housing: Includes a single room in a residence hall, or a single or double room in a shared apartment.
- Residence Halls: Residence halls are located within 45 minutes (by public transportation or bike) of CIEE Copenhagen. The single rooms are equipped with small kitchens and an en-suite bathroom. Residence halls provide shared common spaces with a larger, communal kitchen, multiple study and hangout areas, and gym facilities.
- Shared Apartments: Shared apartments are located within 45 minutes (by public transportation or bike) of CIEE Copenhagen. Apartments feature double and/or triple rooms. In each apartment, students share both living rooms and a full kitchen.
Select Housing: Includes a double room at a private residence hall located within 20 minutes (on foot) of CIEE Copenhagen. Each dorm room is equipped with a kitchenette and an en-suite bathroom, along with shared common spaces including a communal kitchen, multiple study and hangout areas, and gym facilities. Select housing requires an additional fee.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive.
Meals
Residence Hall and Shared Apartments: Meals are not included. Students prepare their own meals in their own kitchenette or the residence hall’s shared kitchen facilities. CIEE provides basic cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. There is also a wide range of restaurants and cafes located nearby.
Academics
Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block. This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Copenhagen the entire time or spend other blocks at our Open Campus Block locations in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago, Shanghai, Sydney, and Yucatan.
Students can choose from a variety of disciplines within seven different tracks: Art and Architecture, Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; or STEM and Society. CIEE Copenhagen is centrally located and convenient to public transportation for exploring the city.
CIEE Copenahagen: Courses are taught in English by CIEE faculty drawn from a variety of higher education institutions in Denmark and worldwide.
Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar, so you can study abroad with CIEE while continuing to meet all your academic goals.
Course Information
Course Notes
- Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
- Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
- Students studying for three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.
Hybrid Courses
Some CIEE courses are offered in a hybrid format to make them available at multiple program locations and increase your course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. All students have the same instructor and meet as one class. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential, and intercultural learning for all. The Course Comparison Tool shows the location of instruction for all classes and the program locations from which the course can be taken. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”. Otherwise, the courses are offered only at the one indicated location.
Academic Projects
- Each (Directed Independent Research) placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements. The process is highly individualized and goal oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
- Students applying for an Academic Project are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.
Language Classes
- No credit-bearing Danish language courses are available.
- Students may add a non-credit “Survival Danish” course to their course load during the on-site orientation.
