Your Destination

Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, has considerably transformed in the past decade and emerged as a "must-stop" destination in Europe. Despite playing host to more than 600,000 residents, Copenhagen retains an old-world, small village feel – with more bicycles than cars traveling its streets. In Europe's safest capital city, students discover an endless array of cultural activities, history, architecture, and more.

Copenhagen is an ideal destination for studying STEM topics. It boasts world-class universities like the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and is home to cutting-edge research facilities and renowned faculty. Students can engage in exciting CIEE courses taught by local experts, directed independent research projects, experience a unique world of STEM and innovation, and network with professionals. The city’s innovation-driven mindset, sustainable living, and quality of life make it a globally unique destination for studying. English-friendly locals, science museums, and STEM industries enhance the experience. Copenhagen combines academic excellence, work-life balance, and a vibrant urban environment, making it a top choice for science enthusiasts.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Copenhagen.

Experiential Learning

For-credit Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by CIEE Copenhagen Academic staff and the home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Denmark. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with a topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to Denmark, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics. An example of a recent project is, “The Unsustainable Green and the Looming Nuclear Age: An Analysis of the Misrepresentation of Biomass and Nuclear Energy in Danish and International Environmental Policy and its Impact on Europe’s Energy Transition.” Students interested must submit additional application materials during course selection.

Academic Culture

CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student engagement, so attendance is mandatory.

The academic environment at CIEE Copenhagen offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

Canvas is the primary digital tool used to manage learning outside of the classroom and communications with the instructor.

Overall, the academic environment at CIEE Copenhagen offers a comprehensive and immersive educational experience, combining rigorous coursework, experiential learning opportunities, and rich co-curricular and cultural activities to enrich students' academic and cultural understanding.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

CIEE courses typically run from Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., allowing for intensive study and exploration. This format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Copenhagen.

During this 12-week program, CIEE courses will be slightly more intense than typical 15-week courses. As they are especially designed to highlight Danish perspectives on the topic of study, they will be interesting and academically demanding. They will also be student and learning-centered, engaging you and your peers in learning activities. Classes will be small, allowing you ample space to interact with your instructor. Classes at CIEE typically meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. As with most U.S. universities, students should expect about 2 hours of study for each hour in class. Attendance in CIEE classes is mandatory, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your CIEE location.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi. Attendance is compulsory in CIEE classes.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. ASU awards grades of "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," " B," "B-," "C+," "C," "D," or "E.” “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
