Your Liberal Arts program in São Paulo lasts a full semester and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds who have Portuguese language skills. You will enroll in host institution courses delivered in Portuguese and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with cross-disciplinary cultural and extracurricular activities while immersing yourself in Brazil's culture. Live and learn in Brazil!

Excursions & Activities 

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in São Paulo will open doors for you to explore Brazil’s rich diversity, language, culture, history, contemporary trends, vibrant art, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.   

Samples of excursions and activities:   

  • Experience Salvador’s Afro-Brazilian heritage on a weekend getaway, exploring Pelourinho’s cobblestone streets, enjoying live Capoeira, and savoring authentic Bahian cuisine at São Joaquim Market 
  • Escape the city on a hike through the Serra da Cantareira, one of the world’s largest urban forests, where you’ll discover hidden waterfalls, wildlife, and learn about São Paulo’s vital role in Brazil’s conservation efforts 
  • Dive into São Paulo’s art scene on a guided street art tour of Beco do Batman, meeting local artists, exploring graffiti’s political roots, and finishing the day with live samba at a local club

Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC): Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) is one of Brazil’s most prestigious private universities, known for its strong focus on social sciences, humanities, law, and sustainability studies. Founded in 1946, PUC-SP is in the Perdizes neighborhood of São Paulo, a vibrant academic and cultural hub. The university has a long-standing tradition of social justice, environmental responsibility, and innovation, making it an ideal setting for students to engage with sustainability-focused research and community projects.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Requirements

  • All São Paulo Liberal Arts students enroll in 4-6 courses for a total of 15-18 semester credits, choosing from: 
    • A minimum of 15 credits at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC) taught in Portuguese 
    • Up to one ASU online courses (max 3 total credits) 
      • Students can select ASU Session A in the Spring & ASU Session A and B in the Fall 

Program Credit

PUC Courses: 2-4 U.S. semester/3-6 quarter credits; 32-68 contact hours   

Course Credit

  • PUC-SP Courses: Typically, 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-72 contact hours  
  • ASU Online Courses: Typically, 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours

Academic Culture

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Sao Paulo: The academic culture at PUC emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and social responsibility. Students will engage in lectures, discussions and experiential learning opportunities that connect to real-world applications. 

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.  

Class Format

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Sao Paulo: PUC-SP courses typically follow a Brazilian academic calendar, with classes meeting two to three times per week. Course schedules vary, with classes held in the morning, afternoon, or evening, allowing students to balance academic commitments with cultural immersion and extracurricular activities. Students are expected to dedicate significant time outside of class for readings, group work, and independent study. Participation and critical analysis are highly valued, and assessments often include written assignments, presentations, and exams. 

Attendance is mandatory, and students are encouraged to actively engage in academic discussions and collaborative projects. 

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.  

Grading

PUC-SP: The grading scale ranges from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest achievable grade. The passing grade is 5.0, except for undergraduate programs in Law and Administration, where it is 6.0. Students must attend at least 75% of classes.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

Program Fees

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
