Your Arts + Sciences program in São Paulo lasts a full semester and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds. You will enroll in a combination of host institution courses and courses taught online through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU, with a wide range of subjects to choose from. CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in São Paulo will open doors for you to explore Brazil’s rich diversity, language, culture, history, contemporary trends, vibrant art, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.   

Samples of excursions and activities: 

  • Hike through lush trails, discover hidden waterfalls, and learn about São Paulo’s efforts in environmental conservation at Serra da Cantareira, one of the largest urban forests in the world 
  • Stroll through Beco do Batman, São Paulo’s iconic open-air street art gallery, and learn how graffiti and muralism have shaped the city’s cultural identity 
  • Visit the charming town of Embu das Artes, just outside São Paulo, known for its bustling artisan markets, colonial architecture, and rich cultural heritage

Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV): Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in São Paulo is one of Brazil’s most prestigious institutions for business, economics, law, and public administration. Founded in 1944, FGV was established to advance Brazil’s economic and social development through high-quality education and research. Located in the heart of São Paulo, Latin America's financial and commercial hub, FGV is renowned for its innovation-driven programs, strong industry connections, and global partnerships that prepare students for leadership roles in a rapidly evolving economy.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

Requirements

All São Paulo Arts + Sciences students enroll in courses for a total of 12-18 credits per semester, choosing from:  

  • A minimum of 4 courses at FGV  
  • Up to two ASU online courses (max 8 total credits) 
    • In the Spring term, students will be limited to ASU session B 

Program Credit

Total Credit: 12-18 U.S. semester credits/18-27 quarter credits.    

Course Credit

  • FGV Courses: 2-6 U.S. semester/3-9 quarter credits; 30-90 contact hours  
  • ASU Online Courses: Typically, 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-60 contact hours

Academic Culture

Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV): At Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) São Paulo, students experience a dynamic and rigorous academic environment that blends theoretical learning with real-world application. FGV is recognized for its strong emphasis on business, economics, public policy, and international affairs, offering globally accredited programs that foster critical thinking, innovation, and leadership. With a curriculum designed to integrate case studies, hands-on projects, and industry collaborations, students gain practical experience and exposure to São Paulo’s vibrant business ecosystem. The university’s interactive classroom culture, combined with networking opportunities, research initiatives, and international partnerships, prepares students to navigate the complexities of global markets while immersing themselves in Brazil’s economic and cultural landscape. 

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.  

Class Format

Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) classesare usually based on lectures, seminars and case studies. Attendance is required and class participation is strongly encouraged by faculty. The size of classes typically ranges between 30 and 50 students. 

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end.  

Grading

Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV): The minimum grade students need to pass a course is 6.00. The grading system ranges from 0.00 to 10.0. CIEE reports final grades for host institution courses using recommended U.S. letter grade equivalencies, following a predetermined grade conversion scale. 

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for CIEE students.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.

Financial Aid

CIEE offers the most grants and scholarships of any study abroad organization, including $8 million/year in travel grants, merit-based scholarships, institutional and MSI grants, and Gilman Go Global Grants.
