Excursions & Activities
Ample activities and day trips will be offered to immerse yourself in Australia’s culture and historical heritage. Examples may include:
- Savoring award-winning wines and indulging in gourmet delights as you explore the Yarra Valley. Stroll through scenic vineyards, sample handcrafted artisan chocolates, and experience the region's finest flavors.
- Winding your way along Australia’s most iconic coastal road, the Great Ocean Road. The towering Twelve Apostles, lush rainforests, and quaint seaside towns await. Along the way, uncover the secrets of ancient geological formations and maritime history.
- Meeting Australia’s unique wildlife up close at Healesville Sanctuary. Learn about conservation efforts, watch captivating animal feedings, and connect with the natural world in the heart of the Yarra Valley.

Academic Projects
Students interested in one of the following credit-bearing Academic Projects must submit additional materials, including home school approval, as part of their course selection:
- Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity toward a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by the CIEE Melbourne Academic Director and home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to Australia. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to Australia, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics.
- Internships allow students the opportunity to have practical work experience in a company within a variety of industry sectors. In addition to the on-site business experience, students participating in an internship have a weekly required classroom component, which provides academic support to their practical experience.

Housing & Meals
Housing
Our housing ensures students are always well-connected to the best of the city. Set in welcoming neighborhoods, students will enjoy a peaceful and secure living environment. Everything you need is within walking distance from their home, including various restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy, and easily accessible public transport options.
Standard Housing: Includes a room in a shared apartment/residence hall or homestay.
- Shared Apartment/Residence Hall: Live with other international students in a shared apartment or residence hall located within 45 minutes from Monash University’s main campus and CIEE Melbourne. You’ll have access to Wi-Fi and all utilities, as well as a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, and comfortable lounge spaces. This option gives you the independence to manage your daily routine while still enjoying the social aspect of living with fellow students.
- Homestay: Immerse yourself in Melbourne’s diverse culture by living with a local host family. Melbourne is a multicultural city, and students will stay with families from various nationalities, including Melburnians. Homestays are located within a 45-60-minute commute by public transportation to Monash University main campus. You’ll share daily life with your host family while enjoying breakfast and dinner together. This is a great opportunity to practice your conversational skills and gain firsthand insight into the local culture, all while having the freedom to explore the city on your own.
Meals
Shared Apartment/Residence Hall: While meals are not included, students can prepare their own meals in the fully furnished kitchen. Melbourne has a vibrant food scene with fresh local fruits, vegetables, and meats readily available. Students can also explore the myriad restaurants in the areas surrounding the residence hall. You’ll find Melbourne’s food is influenced from all corners of the globe!
Homestay: Students who live with homestay families receive two meals daily (breakfast and dinner). The third meal and/or any snacks are on the student. Students can make use of the kitchen space at the homestay.
Academics
Monash University, one of Australia's most prestigious institutions, is recognized globally for its excellence in education, research, and innovation. Established in 1958, Monash has grown into a global university with a student population exceeding 80,000 from more than 170 countries. The university offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across ten faculties, including arts, business, engineering, law, and the sciences. Monash ranks among the top universities worldwide (QS World University Rankings 2024: 37th; Times Higher Education World University: 32nd), providing students with a future-focused education in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Students enroll in 4-5 courses across a diverse range of fields. Students combine two Monash University courses with courses offered at CIEE.

To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.

CIEE offers the most student support of any provider in its program fee, including an airport greeting, full-time leadership and support, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and CIEE iNext travel protection with benefits.
