During my time abroad in Paris with CIEE, I had the chance to go on a weekend trip to Normandie and Caen. This experience offered a fascinating glimpse into French history, culture, and cuisine, all while exploring the beautiful Normandy region.

Day 1: Exploring Caen and Honoring History

Our trip began bright and early on Saturday morning, on a bus, heading northwest toward Normandy. The three-hour drive flew by as we passed picturesque countryside, setting the stage for a weekend that felt like stepping back in time.

The Mémorial de Caen

Our first stop was the Mémorial de Caen, a museum dedicated to World War II and the Battle of Normandy. The museum is not just a repository of history but also a poignant reminder of the war’s human cost. Exhibits traced the events leading up to WWII, the D-Day landings, and the post-war reconstruction of Europe. Walking through the exhibits, I felt a deep connection to the stories of bravery and resilience. The exhibits were incredibly moving and powerful and as a Political Science and History student I found it very fascinating. The museum also houses immersive films and interactive displays that brought the history of the region vividly to life.

After the tour, we enjoyed a private lunch hosted by the museums with delicious French fare where we had time to reflect and recharge for the afternoon.

The Normandy American Cemetery

After lunch, we drove to one of the most moving parts of the trip: the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. Overlooking Omaha Beach, the cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of U.S. soldiers who lost their lives during the D-Day invasion.

The serenity of the grounds, paired with the stories of courage and sacrifice, made this visit incredibly meaningful. Standing on the cliffs and looking out over the beach, it was impossible not to feel the weight of history and gratitude for those who shaped the course of the world.

Having family who served in the WWII I felt very grateful to be able to have this experience.

Checking in and Free Time in Caen

By 6:30 PM, we arrived at The People Caen, a modern and comfortable hotel near the city center. After checking in, we had the evening free to explore Caen on our own. The city’s cobblestone streets, lively squares, and medieval architecture created a perfect backdrop for a leisurely night. A large group of us all went out to get delicious Thai food together before exploring Caen’s nightlife and beautiful river walk! The night was not complete without the hotel’s rooftop bar that served drinks with local specialties. I still remember my apple themed spiced cocktail from that night. This time also gave me the chance to get much closer to the people in the program with me, as well as making many new friends!

Day 2: Brunch at Ferme de Billy

On Sunday morning, we departed from the hotel and drove to Ferme de Billy, a charming family-run farm in the countryside near Rots. Known for its apple orchards and cider production, the farm offered a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We got to wander the property and feed the adorable donkey’s some apples! I loved the donkeys so much.

Then we were given brunch at Ferme de Billy which was a (free!) feast of locally sourced, hearty dishes. From freshly baked bread and cheeses to charcuterie, apple pastries, and their signature cider, every bite felt like an authentic taste of Normandy. Everyone was in a food coma after and I have yet to have a more amazing brunch. We also got free apple cider from the farm to take home! It was amazing

Reflections on the Weekend

This trip to Normandy and Caen was one of the main highlights of my time with CIEE Paris. Visiting sites that hold so much historical and cultural significance gave me a new appreciation for the region and its role in shaping modern history. The weekend balanced solemn reflection, scenic beauty, and delicious food, creating an experience I’ll never forget.
