Soak in the Culture
Bathe Yourself in Culture
One of the most fundamental aspects of studying abroad in a foreign country is being able to experience that countries culture. Its not only a fun and exciting experience for you, but also alows you to gain a new perspective which helps to make you a more understanding, global citizen. To create and maintain peace and understanding in this world it is important to learn about other cultures and try to immerse yourself in their ways and history. During my semester in Seoul through CIEE I have been able to do just that. We have travelled across the country to a city called Gangneung (and neighboring cities) where we were able to learn about the history of Korea and its religious roots.
Respect the Culture
It goes without saying that you dont have to like or even agree with every culture. Surely every culture has aspects that are strange or even offensive to someone else. However, this does not mean that you can't come to understand and respect it. Remember that every culture has had their own experiences and journies which has led them to the point at which they are at today. Understanding that journey is an important part of cultivating deserved respect.
Soak it in
Although it may be obvious to some, it is also important to remember that one's culture can be observed through numerous types of manifestations. Food, buildings, language, the list goes on and on. Try to pick up on these differences. While it may seem insignificant, they are key in trying to truly understand another culture.
