Reminiscing on My Study Abroad Experience in Prague
By: Kendall Wolff
Deciding to go abroad was a very easy decision for me, it was choosing where to go that was the hard part. With using CIEE I got the opportunity to choose up to 3 locations throughout my semester abroad. I chose Prague, Czech Republic for blocks 1 and 2 and Sydney, Australia for block 3. I genuinely was all over the place when deciding where to go and it took me forever to decide. It came to the point where I just needed to pick somewhere and not think too much about it or else I'd just keep going in circles.
I knew I’d be happy anywhere I went but I genuinely believe I chose the right locations for my experience. I was able to explore many other cities in Europe from Prague while getting to experience a city that the majority of people look over. Prague is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cities I have visited in my time here while still having lots to do. Now that I’m only a few days away from leaving Prague to go to my next location, I’ve begun reminiscing on the past few months here.
I’ve had so many great experiences here that were a result of lack of planning or being in the right place at the right time. When walking through a park at night with some of my classmates, we stumbled upon a full blown party just in the middle of the park, hundreds of young people listening to music from DJ stands.
When my mother came to visit we were walking towards a castle we wanted to tour, and ended up finding a wine festival in a park playing old American rock and roll. We did not end up going to the castle and stayed there the whole day. Another night my friends and I were walking through the city when we saw an island in the middle of the river with bright lights. We walked across the bridge and found a live band with a big crowd of young people having a great time.
After going out on the town one night we came across a photo booth where we spent too much time and money but it was so worth it because now we have pictures to remember us all by. One day we just wanted to go to a pool so we looked up one close by and went without looking too much into it. We ended up walking about 20 minutes into a park to find a large crowded pool that seemed straight out of a scenic movie. The amount of live music, restaurants, or bars I have found by accident have made the biggest impact on how I view this city. Truly the best city to get lost in.
Being a part of the ambassador program at CIEE was one of the best decisions I made for my abroad experience. It has been a great opportunity to show everyone back in the U.S. how amazing going abroad is. When deciding to go abroad just know that literally no matter what location you choose just know you will love it. Getting to experience different cultures and food on your time away is very beneficial and highly recommended. Basically, my biggest piece of advice is to just get outside and explore as much of the city you are in as possible.
