Experiencing Culture Shock in Portugal

My time in Portugal has been such an incredible experience, and it’s easily one of the highlights of my college years. That said, there were definitely a few culture shocks along the way. The first thing that stood out to me was how often I got stared at. Portugal is becoming more diverse, but it’s still not as multicultural as some other European countries. As someone who looks a bit different from most people here, I got a lot of curious looks. At first, it felt uncomfortable, but after a while, I realized they were not used to people that don’t look like them.
Another challenge I didn’t expect was the hills in Lisbon. Every single day felt like leg day! The city is full of steep inclines and cobblestone streets, which can be tough to walk on, especially if you’re not wearing the right shoes. If you’re planning to visit or study here, I can’t stress enough how important it is to bring sturdy, comfortable footwear. It’ll make a huge difference when you’re climbing up those hills to class or to explore the city.
One thing I really recommend is learning some basic Portuguese before coming here. Many people in touristy areas speak English, but outside those spots, knowing a few phrases goes a long way. It’s also a great way to connect with locals and show respect for their culture. I know a little Spanish, which helped me understand some Portuguese, but I wish I had put in more effort to learn before arriving.
Lastly, one of the best parts of studying abroad is how easy it is to travel. Portugal is well-connected to other countries, and I used my weekends to explore new places both in Portugal and across Europe. Each trip added to the experience and made me appreciate how unique this opportunity was.
Studying abroad has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. It’s a chance to experience a new culture, meet amazing people, and grow in ways you never expect. If you’re considering it, go for it—you won’t regret it. My time in Portugal has truly been unforgettable.
