When we think of Portugal, the first things that come to mind are usually the beautiful beaches, the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley, or the colorful streets of Lisbon. However, there's a lot more to discover in this beautiful country, especially if you're a history enthusiast. The medieval cities of Portugal offer a unique glimpse into the past, where cobblestone streets, ancient castles, and time-worn churches tell the tales of a bygone era. These cities are the destination for many of the excursions that delight our study abroad students, providing not only educational opportunities but also an immersive cultural experience.

Évora: A World Heritage Site

Évora, located in the Alentejo region, is a treasure trove of medieval architecture and history. The city's well-preserved old town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting numerous historic monuments, the most notable of which is the Evora Cathedral. Built in the Gothic style, with its two imposing towers covered in medieval tile, this cathedral is one of Portugal's oldest and most significant religious sites.

Óbidos: The Romantic Medieval Village

Óbidos is a picturesque village that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Enclosed by ancient walls, the village is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and charming shops. Guarded by its impressive medieval castle, built by the Moors in the 8th century, Óbidos takes you on a journey back in time, especially during its annual Medieval Festival.

Tomar: The Templar City

Tomar is known for its connection to the Knights Templar, a medieval Christian military order. The city's rich history is intertwined with the legacy of these warrior monks. Tomar’s main attractions are the Castle and Convent of Christ, which are considered masterpieces of Manueline architecture and are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Sintra: A Romantic Retreat

Sintra, located near Lisbon, is renowned for its stunning palaces, lush gardens, and mystical aura. The town's medieval roots are evident in its architecture and historic sites. The symbol of the town is the Palace of Sintra, which is Portugal’s best-preserved royal residence from medieval times. Another important remnant of the past is the Moorish Castle, which castle dates back to the 8th century and offers panoramic views of the town below.
