Discovering Seville: Spain’s Most Magical City
By: Sophia Liott
When most people think of Spain, their minds go to cities like Barcelona and Madrid, and while those places are great, there is no place quite like Seville, Spain. Nestled in the heart of Andalusia, Seville is full of life, amazing architecture, and mouth-watering food. Whether you’re into history, culture, or just looking for a great spot to enjoy life, Seville has it all. In my time abroad, I have visited countless countries and yet no place has compared to the wonders that Seville has to offer.
One of the most unique and culturally significant activities Seville has to offer is Flamenco. Watching a Flamenco show in Seville is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you will never forget. It blends singing, dancing, and guitar to produce not just a dance, but an art. These performances radiate emotion that is shown through the stomps and claps incorporated into the dance – showing the watchers joy, sorrow, and every emotion in between. Watching a Flamenco show in Seville is truly indescribable, as words cannot describe how wonderful a show is, making it a must-see in Seville. There are places all over the city to see a Flamenco show, however, I went to the Teatro Flamenco Sevilla and would recommend all to go and watch a show.
Seville also has an amazing culinary scene, like the rest of Spain. If you’ve heard anything about the food in Spain, you have been told about tapas, which are common across Spain. Seville is no different, as they are also known for their tapas, and boy are they good. Not only is the food itself good, but the energy and environment you get to experience is so unique. This city is full of tapas bars where friends gather to share small plates and have lively conversations. There is a wide variety of small plates – from patatas bravas to jamon iberico and salmorejo – there is something for everyone to try and enjoy. However, my favorite dish to get at tapas restaurants across the city is the churros con chocolate. Nothing beats the warm, freshly cooked churros dipped in the rich, delicious chocolate sauce served on the side. They are so filling and rich that you could easily share an order of them with one or two friends.
Seville not only has amazing food, but it also has amazing views. You must visit the Plaza de Espana – as it is completely breathtaking and where parts of Star Wars were filmed. You can simply just walk around and look at the beautiful architecture, or you can also rent a small boat and take a small trip along the canal that is in the Plaza. The views do not stop there – head to the Alcazar of Seville if you want to be transported back in time when visiting this royal palace. The wonderful tile work, peaceful courtyards, and lush gardens are so beautiful that even Game of Thrones could not resist filming here. Take a short walk from the Alcazar and you will find The Seville Cathedral and La Giralda. Not only are they breathtakingly beautiful, but they also come with a shocking history as Christopher Columbus’s tomb is found here. These structures are just some of the highlights of the architecture found in Seville, but no matter where you go in the city, there will be beautiful views everywhere.
Seville is one of those places that makes you fall in love with life all over again. Whether you’re soaking up the history, enjoying the music, or just chilling with some tapas and a cold drink, it’s the kind of city that leaves a lasting impression.
