Afternoon Soccer at Hilton Park
This afternoon’s activities featured soccer at Hilton Park, near the CIEE study center in Rabat, and the students had a blast! Soccer, or kura as it’s known in the local Arabic dialect, is everywhere in Morocco, from pickup games in the streets to juggling circles on the beaches. Whenever a local, European, or national game is going on, every café television will be tuned to the beIN SPORTS channel, and when the national team wins, the sustained sound of Dirou Niyya, Morocco’s de facto soccer national anthem, blares from every car window and Medina apartment. Passion for the sport only grew during the Moroccan men’s national team’s historic run in 2022 World Cup, so we were sure to seize on our students’ interest and set up a friendly game after class this Friday. Staff also joined in on the nail-biting affair, seeing the game to a 5-5 draw, with one controversial goal reversal to deny the game winner. We had a fantastic time and can’t wait for CIEE’s return to the pitch!
