11 Tips I Wish I Knew Before Studying Abroad
By: Alexa Levy
Hi all! My name is Alexa Levy. I studied abroad through CIEE in Barcelona during my junior year of college, doing the Global Architecture and Design Program. Reflecting on my experience abroad, here are some tips I wish I knew before embarking on my study abroad journey to help you make the most of your experience:
1. Have a Good Weekend Bag/Carry-On for Trips
Weekend trips will likely be a big part of your study abroad experience. Invest in a durable and lightweight bag that’s easy to carry on trains, buses, and planes.
2. Pack Light – You’ll Shop More Than You Expect
Barcelona is known for its fashion. Leave room in your suitcase for shopping, especially during cooler months when you can snag a stylish jacket locally.
3. Attendance Is Likely Mandatory
Even if you’re under the weather, many programs have strict attendance policies. Be prepared to communicate with professors if you’re unable to attend.
4. Get a Long-Term Transportation Pass
Barcelona’s public transportation system is efficient and cost-effective. Save money by purchasing a three-month pass instead of daily tickets.
5. Pay for Seat Reservations on Trains
To avoid the hassle of standing or not having a spot, always reserve a seat when booking train tickets.
6. Use Packing Cubes or Vacuum-Seal Bags
Maximize your luggage space by organizing with packing cubes or vacuum-seal bags. They’ll keep your belongings compact and tidy.
7. Adjust to Late Dinners
Dinner in Barcelona typically happens between 8-10 PM. Embrace the local dining schedule and enjoy the relaxed pace of meals.
8. Connect with Club Promoters for Nightlife
Promoters like Aashilist and Rumba can offer perks like free entrance, tables, drinks, and even Uber rides. Networking with them can enhance your nightlife experience.
9. Download the FreeNow App for Rides
Barcelona doesn’t have Uber. FreeNow is the go-to app for reliable and affordable transportation.
10. Don’t Overplan Weekend Trips
While it’s tempting to explore a new city every weekend, take time to fully experience Barcelona. There’s so much to see and do locally!
11. Carry a Portable Charger
Bring a portable charger with you everywhere. It’s a simple safety measure and ensures you’re never stranded without a working phone.
