Fall Activities in the Southwest
See the leaves change
Turning from green to yellow, orange, and red, the leaves all over the Southwest put on a spectacular show. Experience views shimmering with fall color in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.
Explore Zion National Park
Hiking the Narrows of the Virgin River Canyon in Zion National Park was ranked fifth in the "National Geographic" “America’s Best 100 Adventures.” Sandstone canyon walls rise thousands of feet on both sides of the river. Complete your journey sometime between September 1 and October 15, before it gets too cold.
Get a taste of New Mexico
There’s no better way to get to know a place than to eat local food. Eat at one of these tried-and-true New Mexico restaurants. Take cooking classes, tour wineries, and connect with local farmers at New Mexico's farmers markets.
Take the San Juan Scenic Byway
The San Juan Scenic Byway in southwest Colorado takes you through unbelievable views of 14,000-foot-high mountain peaks. The road itself is a destination. Even so, the drive leads to other things you’ll want to see: Native American cave dwellings and picturesque, historic Colorado towns, including Telluride, Durango, and Silverton.
Honor service members on Veterans Day
November 11 is observed annually as Veterans Day, honoring all of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Pay your respects by attending a Veterans Day parade; find locations here.
Eat apple pie
Apple pie is always a treat, but it’s best when the apples are in season. Watch this video to see how this iconic American dessert is made. Try making one yourself, or order a slice from a restaurant or bakery. If anyone asks, go for it à la mode (that’s with ice cream on top).
Give thanks on Thanksgiving
On November 26, gather with friends at a home or restaurant, express your thanks for what’s good in life, and eat a fabulous meal together. The traditional American Thanksgiving feast includes roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and pumpkin pie. Make reservations at a restaurant near you at Open Table.
Go to a football game
Watch the Arizona Cardinals play professional football at the University of Phoenix Stadium. College games are also fun (and cheaper). Cheer on the teams playing for the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, the University of Arizona, and Arizona State. Get tickets to a live game if you can, or head to a local sports bar where fans watch the games on TV.
Get lost in a corn maze
The United States grows more corn than any other country in the world. In the fall, many farmers invite visitors to make their way through a corn maze, an intricate path system carved into the cornfield. It’s a little scary – perfect for Halloween season – and a lot of fun.
