Fall Activities in the Northwest
See the leaves change
In October, the leaves put on a spectacular show as they change color from green to red, yellow, orange, and magenta. Grab a friend and take an especially scenic route through Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, or Washington.
Get a taste of Portland, Oregon
Portland, Oregon, has a reputation for serving legendary food. Go out to farm-to-table restaurants, shop at vibrant farmers markets, and eat nationally acclaimed street food. Get in on the flavor!
See the Beartooth Mountains
See some of the most awe-inspiring mountain scenery in the United States along the Beartooth Highway. Along these 68 miles of road between Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana, you’ll see waterfalls, lakes, and 360-degree views. You’ll feel on top of the world!
Honor service members on Veterans Day
November 11 is observed annually as Veterans Day, honoring all of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Pay your respects by attending a Veterans Day Parade in your state; find locations here.
Go apple picking
Under a blue sky in golden fall sunlight, pluck an apple from a tree and crunch right into it – sweet, sour, and delicious. Find a pick-your-own apple orchard near you
Eat apple pie
Apple pie is always a treat, but it’s best when the apples are in season. Watch this video to see how this iconic American dessert is made. Try making one yourself, or order a slice from a restaurant or bakery. If anyone asks, go for it à la mode (that’s with ice cream on top).
Give thanks on Thanksgiving
On the last Thursday in November, gather with friends at a home or restaurant, express your thanks for what’s good in life, and eat a fabulous meal together. The traditional American Thanksgiving feast includes roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and pumpkin pie. Make reservations at a restaurant near you at Open Table.
Go to a football game
Watch the Seattle Seahawks play professional football at CenturyLink field. College games are fun and much cheaper than the pros. Cheer on the teams playing for the University of Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State (on their famous blue field), the University of Idaho, and the University of Washington. It’s also fun (and much cheaper!) to watch games on TV at a local sports bar with sports fans.
Get lost in a corn maze
The United States grows more corn than any other country in the world. In the fall, many farmers invite visitors to make their way through a corn maze, an intricate path system carved into the cornfield. It’s a little scary – perfect for Halloween season – and a lot of fun.
Go to a fall festival
The 17-day Washington State Fair is one big celebration of fall in the Northwest. Go on rides. See a rodeo, music concerts, fireworks, and a palace filled with piglets (baby pigs). Find out if a 1,609.51-pound pumpkin will break the national pumpkin heavyweight record!
We’d love to see and hear about your adventures on Facebook.
