Welcome to Thailand!
Our first week in Thailand flown by! After traveling for nearly two days, we arrived in Khon Kaen, a small city in Northeast Thailand. On their first full day students ate their first Thai breakfast, learned about life in Khon Kaen, and participated in a welcoming ceremony that included a traditional Isaan meal. The students tried 2 kinds of sticky rice, Isaan style vegetables, chicken wings, eggs, and more! They will get to try more of the food of Isaan when we travel to a village next week.
While in Khon Kaen, students have been exploring the Night Markets, coffee shops, and restaurants around the University campus where we are staying. They've also learned about environmental science, human rights, and anti-oppression and how these topics relate to the community that we will be visiting. Students have also been enjoying their Thai language classes! Last night they used their new vocabulary to participate in a cooking contest- they learned how to cook som tum Thai (Thai style papaya salad) and tom yum soup. The winning cooks got a gift certificate to a nearby coffee shop where they can get honey toast, a popular snack.
