Day Trip to Tivoli

On Saturday, we took a day trip to Tivoli, a little town outside of Rome where wealthy Romans from antiquity to the Renaissance used to vacation. We visited Villa Gregoriana, the remains of an ancient Roman domus (a fancy house), and hiked to some truly stunning waterfalls. After lunch, we went to Villa d’Este, a Renaissance-era estate with breathtaking gardens and fountains.

Not exactly a "day of rest"

Sunday was another busy day. In the morning, participants had free time. We all arrived at the famed Spanish Steps together and then split into smaller groups. While my co-PL Francesca and I enjoyed a caffe’ in a central location, participants were free to explore. Some went to throw coins in the Trevi Fountain, others took advantage of the shopping on Via Del Corso. Others, made the compulsory stop to a nearby McDonalds (turns out, the menu is pretty different than the U.S.).

In the afternoon, participants got a chance to give back to the city we’ve called home over the past week. Thanks to the Italian environmental nonprofit, Legambiante, we participated in project picking up trash to improve one of Rome’s few bike lanes. Legambiante is working on making biking a safer and more common practice in Rome. They were extremely thankful to our CIEE participants for all their help.
