Pottery Workshop in Triana

Honors Spanish Language & Culture

A group of eager honors students set off on an extraordinary and enlightening excursion in the picturesque neighborhood of Triana, located right in the center of Sevilla. They spent time in a pottery studio, learning about the long history of Triana's renowned hand-painted tiles. Their creativity could be let go, and they could connect with the rich history of the area, in addition to learning a traditional craft.

The local pottery workshop graciously welcomed the high school pupils, who were then taught the principles of tile building and hand painting. They were introduced to the vivid colors and detailed patterns that are distinctive of Triana's tiles under the guidance of professional painters. The artisans imparted their expertise on enduring themes that have been handed down through the ages, such as geometric patterns, floral patterns, and historical sceneries.

Inspired after visiting Sevilla´s Real Alcazar and Granada´s neighborhood El Albaicín the students got the chance to hand paint a 15x15 tile in the style of old Sevilla. Some of them chose to recreate the traditional patterns of natural motives, some of them explored the fauna of Andalucía themes while the rest of them decided to go with original designs.

Contrary to the often digital world they live in, they discovered the thrill of doing something physical with their hands. They were able to let their creativity run wild and discover their individual artistic voices via the process of making and painting the tiles.

After they finished, the professionals dated them and registered them in order not to lose any of the tiles before putting them to the oven where they will be “cooking” for a while. The students will get them back next week, all done and with that shimmery effect the tile gets after they are done.
