Playing Yucatacean games
On Wednesday afternoon, students met in the historical Parque de las Américas to play ancient, traditional games from the Yucatán. Program leaders first lead rounds of kimbomba, a game similar to baseball. Students used small sticks to hit pieces of carved wood off of the ground. The winners were those who hit the pieces as far as possible in their groups! Next, students played tinjoroch, a game that involved manipulating a button on a piece of string. In order to win, students had to twist it over twenty times and get into a rhythm to keep it circling.
While at the park, students also enjoyed conversing with locals and completing their speaking challenges for the day. Even though it began to rain near the end of our time together, students embraced the rain by dancing and learning a new song in the covered outdoor amphitheater.
