Only One of the Most Important Museums in the Country!
The Museo de bellas artes de Sevilla (or "Museum of Fine Arts Seville" in English) houses work by such celebrated painters as El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo, Goya, and more. This art museum is considered nearly the most important in the country, second only to El Prado in Madrid. So when in Rome--oops, sorry, Seville--CIEE students just had to visit!
While touring the museum in Spanish, every student kept a sharp eye out for their assigned portrait, Where's Waldo-style. Students explored the gorgeous museum building, a former convent, and whenever a student found their portrait, we snapped photos!
The museum's artwork ran the gamut from Baroque to Renaissance to 20th century art. We learned that a few of Spain's most famous artists--Zurbarán, Murillo, and de Leal--were originally from Seville itself.
We viewed paintings containing real gold leaf, paintings depicting Seville itself (such as the Torre de oro/Tower of Gold, which we've passed many times on foot!), religious scenes, famous poets, gods and goddesses from Greek mythology, and beyond.
Students told me that they were really excited to get to visit one of the city's most notable tourist attractions. Seville is steeped in history and culture, and here at CIEE, we have the opportunity to maximize our immersion sevillana every day!
