Creative Writing in Literary London

Saturday was another fabulous day in the UK! CIEE students took a riverboat to the seaside borough of Greenwich to enjoy the views of London’s most cherished landmarks such as the Big Ben, the London Eye, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Tower Bridge. Following this, students visited the National Maritime Museum, where they explored the maritime history of Britain and the world by observing an extensive collection of ship models, paintings, and maps.

Earlier this week, the creative writers took a trip to the Grant Museum of Zoology to gather inspiration for a short story piece in the genre of gothic horror. This exhibit included skeletons, specimens, and stuffed animals, which excited some and shocked others! The young writers were asked to take note of their thoughts, feelings, and attitudes throughout their tour of the Frankenstein-esque museum, so they could produce writing in a tone that evokes an eerie mood that is essential to the genre.

Lastly, participants visited the Twist Museum, where they engaged in an immersive experience in exhibitions created by visual artists and neuroscientists to boost their creativity. This experience propelled these creative writers into their final week of the program, where they are spending time preparing their final portfolios. The portfolios are a brilliant accumulation of their hard work and growth as writers, world travelers, and change makers!
