Learning the history

We've encountered so much amazing information and context since arriving here in La República Dominicana. The long history of the island's politics, revolutions, and independences (yes, plural) has been very interesting. Here we are at the Monument for the Heroes of the Restoration, one of the most essential sites of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. From here we could see the whole city and the surrounding mountain range. We learned about how the monument was originally installed by the dictator Trujillo, but it remains a strong symbol of the strength and perserverance of Dominicans as an honor to those who fought in the Dominican War for Independence in 1844.
