This unique capital has a history dating from the prehistoric and middle ages.  Erfurt is where Martin Luther studied and was one of the largest cities of the Holy Roman Empire in 1500.  Today Erfurt has a population of over 213,000 and is home to many historical tourist attractions, including the Petersberg Citadel and the Old Synagogue.
