Cooking Class
To escape the Roman heat, we headed into the kitchen today to make Pizza Napoletana - specifically una pizza Margherita! Everyone had tons of fun with this hands on cultural activity, and got to flex their Italian comprehension skills listening to and following directions.
We learned all about the art and science of la vera pizza napoletana. The flour, yeast, and salt mixed together with just the right amount of water has to sit and rise for at least 10 hours, but up to 24 before it gets carefully rolled out. Students were able to take part in every part of the process, from making dough to rolling it out and topping it with beautiful tomato sauce, basil, and mozzarella. The ingredients make the colors of the Italian flag!
Of course, students enjoyed their pizzas as they came out of the oven before heading back to the study center for an Italian lesson this afternoon. What a rewarding experience for all!
