CIEE Students Ponder Alternate Histories in Berlin
A group of CIEE students recently embarked on a thought-provoking journey through Germany’s past at the Deutsches Historisches Museum. The exhibition, "Roads Not Taken," presented a series of counterfactual scenarios, inviting visitors to contemplate how history might have unfolded differently.
Curated by historian Dan Diner and a team of experts, the exhibit posed questions that reverberated through the ages: What if Claus von Stauffenberg's assassination attempt on Hitler had succeeded? How might Germany's trajectory have changed if Peter Brinkmann had offered more concrete details about relaxed travel restrictions? And what if the protests in Leipzig had been met with the same brutal force as those in Tiananmen Square?
These hypothetical scenarios sparked a range of reactions among the students. Some found the exhibition deeply unsettling, while others were captivated by the opportunity to reimagine the past.
Following their exploration of Germany's alternate realities, the students enjoyed some free time to explore Berlin's vibrant downtown area.
