Arrival in Johannesburg and Constitution Hill
After a LONG travel day, including a 15 hour flight from Newark, our HIgh School Global Navigators have finally arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa! We are excited to learn, participate in cultural activities, grow as leaders, and engage in some service work during our time here.
On Monday, we had orientation and did some ice breakers to get to know each other better. We started to learn some background information about apartheid in South Africa, then set off for our first cultural visit. Constitution Hill was a former prison, originally built for male prisoners. Nelson Mandela and Gandhi are just two imates that lived there. We saw some of the former prison cells and learned about the awful and unequal conditions in which the prisoners were held. We also toured the Women's Jail and Constitutional Court. It was an emotionally charged but important visit in the context of South African history.
