Adios, Costa Rica!

With our time in Costa Rica coming to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on everything we learned, the memories we made and the special moments that we will always hold near and dear to our hearts.

Pura Vida: More Than Just a Phrase

First things first, let's talk about "Pura Vida". It's not just a saying in Costa Rica; it's a way of life. It essentially means pure life! Pura Vida is used to greet each other, say goodbye, and basically express that life is awesome. It's like their version of Hakuna Matata, but with more beach vibes and fewer lions.

Food, Glorious Food!

Now, onto the good stuff - the food! Costa Rican cuisine is a mouthwatering mix of fresh ingredients, local spices, and a whole lot of love. One of the staples you'll encounter is gallo pinto, which translates to "spotted rooster" but don't worry, no roosters were harmed in the making. It's a magical blend of rice and black beans cooked up with onions, bell peppers, and Lizano sauce (a must-try condiment that's like the Costa Rican version of ketchup).

Conservation and Sustainability

Costa Rica is not only a cultural treasure trove but also a global leader in environmental conservation and sustainable tourism. With over 25% of its land protected in national parks and reserves, the country offers unparalleled opportunities for eco-friendly adventures. Whether you're hiking through lush cloud forests, zip-lining over canopy tops, or spotting exotic wildlife like sloths and toucans, every adventure contributes to the preservation of Costa Rica's natural beauty.

What we've Learned

“I’ve learned a lot about sustainable farming and the importance of biodiversity, from bout our farm on campus and from the amazing woman at Las Lluvias! I also learned that I love zipline and the views of monteverde are absolutely amazing” -Lucy S

“I learned about many of the different sustainable practices. I also learned that I’m not afraid of bus as much as I thought I was” -Deethya K.

“I’ve learned to be more confident in my ideas. I also miss my family way more than I thought I would, which has me reconsidering how far I want to be for college” -Ciara D.

“I”ve learned about local farming practices and the biodiversity that is used in many of the businesses we visited” Jenna L.

" I have learned so much more Spanish than before! I was place into the advanced Spanish class and I had a bit of a challenge that was really good for me. I also learned a lot about sustainibility in everyday life, especially when it comes to farming and using natural resources. I've learned about powerful women in STEM through my peers and all of the research we have been able to do!" -Bella S

As we look back on an amazing 3 weeks, one thing is clear - this small but mighty country offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for every traveler. From its mouth watering cuisine to its commitment to conservation and warm-hearted hospitality, Costa Rica invites you to embrace Pura Vida and immerse yourself in its rich tapestry of traditions.

In Costa Rica, every moment is a celebration of life, nature, and the joy of being alive. ¡Pura Vida!
