Your Destination
Tokyo is widely regarded as Japan’s cultural capital and one of the most vibrant cities in the world. It’s a city where art, fashion, technology, food, and pop culture converge. From the bustling streets of Shibuya and Harajuku to the peaceful gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo offers a perfect balance between modern urban life and serene traditional culture. The name Tokyo literally means "Eastern Capital" in English. With thousand-year-old temples just around the corner from the most modern skyscrapers, even the experienced traveler will find something to discover during their time in Tokyo.
The city is also a gateway to many natural attractions. Day trips to Mount Fuji, Nikko, and Kamakura offer students a chance to explore Japan’s beautiful landscapes, while activities like hiking, hot springs, and seasonal festivals are easily accessible. Tokyo’s public transportation system makes it convenient to travel within the city and beyond, providing students with endless opportunities to explore.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Tokyo.

Housing & Meals
Meals
CIEE Tokyo offers diverse housing options, from student dormitories to homestays, to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home.
Standard Housing: Includes a room in a student dorm or a homestay.
- Oberlin Student Dormitories: The student dormitories are newly built off-campus providing single rooms with kitchenette and private bathrooms. Students have access to study rooms, meeting rooms, a TV area, and laundry at the dorms. Dorms are conveniently located near public transportation routes and a free shuttle bus takes passengers to the J.F. Oberlin main campus in five-to-eight minutes.
If the Oberlin student dormitories are fully booked, CIEE also provides alternative accommodation at a private student dormitory which is located around 30 minutes by public transportation to the campus.
- Homestays: Homestays provide students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Japan's diverse culture. Students will gain firsthand insight into everyday life in Tokyo while spending quality time with their host families. The English proficiency of the host families varies, ranging from beginner to advanced (CEFR A2 to C1). It takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes by public transportation from the host family’s residence to the J.F. Oberlin main campus.
Meals
- Student Dormitories: Students have shared kitchen facilities to prepare meals or purchase food and drinks at local grocers.
- Homestays: Students who live with host families receive two meals daily (usually breakfast and dinner) from Monday to Sunday. The other meal and/or any snacks are the responsibility of the student. Students can make use of the kitchen space at the homestay.
Students who are staying for a full year are responsible for their meals during breaks between semesters.
