Your Destination

Situated on the border of Russia and only a short ferry ride away from Finland, Estonia is an incredible Baltic nation known for being a member of the European Union, Eurozone, and NATO. The country boasts a thriving democracy and is highly developed, with an exceptionally advanced digital infrastructure in place.

Estonia’s cultural hub, Tallinn, will be your backdrop while studying abroad in northeastern Europe. Historic gates, defensive towers, cobblestone streets, hilltop castles, and beautiful cathedrals all contribute to Tallinn – also known as the “Gem of the Baltic” – being recognized as one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. Today, Tallinn is not only famed for being Estonia’s capital and largest city; it’s also renowned for being the “Silicon Valley of Europe,” as the city is nearly 100% digital.

From Estonia’s 18 exceptional universities – with 10 offering programs in English – to CIEE’s established partnership with Tallinn University of Technology, a highly ranked institution renowned for its science and technology faculty, you’ll have ample opportunities to study emerging academic topics, including cyber and energy security, environmental science, engineering, marketing, IT, entrepreneurship, and many more.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Tallinn.

Academics

Creators of digital innovations, Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) is leading Estonia and the world toward a sustainable digital future with confidence. As a leader in science, technology, and innovation, the school maintains constant interaction with universities around the world, bringing together scientists, students, and entrepreneurs. TalTech is also the most international university in Estonia. Of the nearly 10,000 enrolled students, approximately 16% come from more than 100 different countries across the globe.

The university-wide initiative, TalTechDigital, implements new digital solutions for the entire university campus. The Smart City Centre of Excellence, established in 2020, brings the top expertise in smart urban space solutions to TalTech and makes the university’s compact and beautiful campus one of the smartest in the world.

Founded in 1918, TalTech is the only technological university in Estonia. It is a research-based university offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in technology, applied science, information technology, business, and maritime studies. Renewed study programs targeting the labor market needs to make TalTech graduates more marketable.

TalTech strengths include STEM and business areas of study. Focus is placed not only on the theoretical field of STEM but also on putting this knowledge into practice and into business, like startups.

Fall classes at TalTech end in December and official exams can take place in January. Spring classes at TalTech end in May and official exams can take place in early June. Early exams may be possible but must be confirmed on an individual basis with the professor of each course. Students may be able to take their exams early, though only if they request it at the start of the semester. Housing will be covered until all exams are completed. However, as it is impossible to confirm exam schedules prior to arrival, we advise students who wish to take their exams early to book an airline ticket with a low change fee or a flexible departure date.

Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions during the semester and 6-week sessions in the summer that fit within the CIEE academic calendar, so you can study abroad with CIEE while continuing to meet all your academic goals.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and CIEE staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

TalTech is a compact campus with state-of-the-art laboratories, a modern library, a business center, an active student house, a sports hall, several restaurants, and numerous student organizations. There is always a way to put what you study into practice.

The academic environment at CIEE Tallinn offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

ASU Courses: You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. Some are earning their degrees entirely online, while others, like you, are supplementing their education with an online course. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online. Most ASU online courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set log-in times, but make sure to verify this before the add/drop deadline in case you want to make a change.

Class Format

University classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. Classes at TalTech usually consist of around 20 students but can be as large as 50. Classes include both local and international students. Coursework is centered around learning outcomes and will be divided into lectures, practice time, and exercises.

Courses taught at the CIEE Center are typically for CIEE students only. CIEE courses typically run up to times per week Monday through Thursday, providing students with a concentrated schedule that allows for intensive study and exploration. This condensed format encourages students to fully engage with the material and make the most of their time in Tallinn.

In addition to lectures, CIEE courses often incorporate local field trips and co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes of Tallinn and its surroundings. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5 weeks long in semesters and 6 weeks long in the summer, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other CIEE courses begin or end. You’ll need a standard PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer with a download speed higher than 25 Mbps, as well as access to email, productivity software like Microsoft Office and other applications needed to perform a variety of educational functions. Most course materials you will need are available online. Since you are working mostly or entirely asynchronously, you’re given deadlines for your assignments by your instructor or in your syllabus, but you can work at your own pace within these due dates. Most instructors suggest a recommended pace to optimize your learning, but you have the flexibility to complete your ASU courses while pursuing your studies at your CIEE location.

Grading

Attendance is mandatory in CIEE courses, with absences impacting final grades. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

ASU grading As a U.S. institution of higher education, the grading practices should be familiar to any CIEE student. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” grading options are not allowed for CIEE students. Please see the CIEE Academic Manual for Students for more information about your grades.
