Your Destination

Located in the northwestern region of Costa Rica, Monteverde lies along the continental divide at the crest of the Cordillera de Tilarán mountain chain, which is blanketed by a cool, wet cloud forest extending down into the Atlantic lowlands. The cloud forest provides a striking contrast to the deciduous forest on the Pacific side.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was founded in 1972 to protect the entire ridge above Monteverde and down into the Peñas Blancas Valley. Due to its unique history and geography, Monteverde is home to exotic flora, fauna, wildlife, and sustainability projects, including agriculture, energy production, water conservation, forest management, and biodiversity conservation.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Monteverde.

Courses are taught by knowledgeable and well-trained Costa Rican instructors who are experts on the resources that Monteverde and Costa Rica have to offer for academic purposes. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and continuous assessment. Similar to classes at U.S. institutions, students should expect to spend an average of two hours of preparation and study for each hour in CIEE classes.

Class Format

CIEE courses are scheduled Monday through Thursday. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and continuous assessment. Most courses combine lectures with local field trips and excursions to help students gain a better understanding of the local culture.  Class attendance is mandatory, and absences affect final grades.

ASU courses are held online through Canvas. Course modules are organized with weekly content, and the calendar provides all class assignments and due dates. Feedback on assignments is provided by instructors that monitor completion, answer questions, and hold office hours. Students may interact with other U.S. and CIEE students worldwide.

Grading

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. Students are graded based on class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
