Your Destination

Perched on the banks of the Huangpu River and the East China Sea, Shanghai is China’s largest city by population, and a global hub of culture, commerce, and finance. Massively redeveloped over the past 20 years, the city boasts many of the world’s latest and greatest buildings stretching up in the new financial district and the world’s fastest-growing rapid-transit system, featuring the world’s first commercial high-speed Maglev train.

The CIEE Shanghai Center is located inside the main campus of East China Normal University (ECNU) in downtown Shanghai, Putuo District, known as the “Garden University” for its beautiful natural surroundings.

CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Shanghai.

Research

For-credit Directed Independent Research is for qualified students who have demonstrated academic rigor and curiosity towards a particular research topic. Independent research topics will be approved by CIEE Shanghai Center Director and home institution and must reflect a topic that is relevant to China. To be accepted into this course, students must submit a structured proposal with topic of exploration, significance of research topic as it relates to China, methodology, a literature review, and a schedule of research milestones. Upon research completion, students will present their findings to a panel of academics. Past projects, such as the examination of the Shanghai Jewish community, analysis of minority groups' influence on Chinese foreign policy, and investigation into sustainable fashion marketing in Shanghai, illustrate the diversity and depth of research opportunities available.

Academic Culture

Courses taught at the CIEE Center are typically for CIEE students only. ECNU classes include both local and international students. A typical class schedule includes a combination of both CIEE and university-administered classes and will span from Monday to Friday. Classes at both East China Normal University and CIEE meet 1-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-4 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance to CIEE classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by CIEE’s learning management system, Canvas.

Class Format

CIEE reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

Grading

ECNU course grades are generally based on class participation, a mid-term exam, research papers, oral presentations, and a final exam. Each instructor determines the exact breakdown of grades. In most courses examinations at the end of the semester constitute a significant share of the final assessment. Attendance is mandatory and absences affect final grades. Some courses include compulsory field trips with special assignments as part of class work. CIEE reports final grades for host institution courses using recommended U.S. letter grade equivalencies, following a predetermined grade conversion scale.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for CIEE courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors.
