Why It's Never Too Late to Study Abroad: My Experience in Madrid
By: Sydnee Neitzel
As I reached the final semester of my college career, I was faced with a decision I had always dreamed of: studying abroad. But, despite years of wanting to experience life in another country, I hesitated. The thought of missing out on senior year activities back home or going alone held me back. At the last minute, I decided to take the opportunity. I applied to study abroad in Madrid for my fall semester of senior year, and I can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
It’s easy to think that studying abroad is something you should have done earlier in your college career, but that’s just not true. College in the U.S. is always there waiting for you to come back, but the opportunity to live in another country, experience a new culture, and make lasting memories with people from all over the world isn’t something you can easily replicate after graduation. It wasn’t until I arrived in Madrid that I fully understood how much this experience would shape me.
One of the most incredible aspects of studying abroad is the people you meet. Living in a shared apartment with girls from different universities, backgrounds, and countries provided me with a whole new perspective. I made lifelong friends who I never would have met otherwise. We traveled together and shared experiences that will stay with me for years to come. It’s not just about academics—it’s about the people you meet and the connections you create.
The weekends were filled with adventures to other countries like Italy, Greece, and France. These travels were more than just sightseeing; they were opportunities to immerse myself in new cultures, try new foods, and gain insights that will influence the way I see the world for the rest of my life.
One of the highlights of my semester was taking a culture and cuisine class through the program. It wasn’t just another classroom experience—it was an adventure. We went on excursions, like a cooking class where we learned to make traditional paella. These hands-on experiences allowed me to appreciate international cuisine in a way that textbooks never could. Cooking together and learning about Spain’s culinary traditions was an unforgettable part of my journey.
Studying abroad also taught me a lot about myself. I realized that there’s something truly special about stepping outside of your comfort zone. At first, I was nervous about navigating the city on my own, ordering food in Spanish, or trying to find my way through the complex metro system. But with each new challenge, I grew more confident. I came to understand that growth often happens in moments of discomfort, and that taking risks is essential for personal development.
Looking back, I can honestly say that studying abroad was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It allowed me to see the world from a different angle, meet amazing people, and gain a deeper understanding of cultures beyond my own. Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, it’s never too late to take the leap and study abroad. You won’t just be learning about the world—you’ll be learning about yourself. If you have the chance, take it.
