Diversity abroad scholarships and grants are designed to support students from underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that they have access to global educational opportunities. They provide financial assistance to students who face barriers – whether financial, cultural, or social – that may prevent them from studying abroad. By targeting students from diverse ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds, these scholarships and grants help level the playing field, making study abroad a reality for all students, regardless of their circumstances. Who Can Apply for Diversity Abroad Scholarships and Grants?
Diversity abroad scholarships and grants are open to students from underrepresented backgrounds, including those who identify as racial or ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, or those from low-income households. Students attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) or those receiving Pell Grants may also be eligible. Top 3 CIEE Diversity Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants
Below, we’ll explore the top three diversity study abroad scholarships and grants designed to help students overcome financial barriers and access transformative global education opportunities.
#1: The Frederick Douglass-Daniel O’Connell Global Internship
The Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship is a fully-funded, eight-week summer internship program in Dublin, Ireland, for diverse student leaders. To apply, you must be Pell Grant-eligible.
Interns will deepen their knowledge of Irish history and culture while gaining practical work experience to enhance their professional skills. This diversity abroad scholarship places interns in an immersive experience with an Irish organization that aligns with their career goals, while also participating in a 6-credit academic internship seminar.
#2: CIEE Gilman Go Global Grant
The Gilman Go Global grant is a CIEE-funded award for scholars and applicants of the U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. The Gilman Scholarship provides financial assistance to students for whom a major barrier to study abroad is financial resources.
Students not selected as Gilman Scholars qualify for up to $2,500 (semester or 3 Block Programs), $1,500 (Quarter or 2 Block Programs), and $1,000 (summer programs or Single Block programs). Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship qualify for up to $500 (semester or 3 Block Programs), $300 (Quarter or 2 Block Programs), and $250 (summer programs or Single Block programs).
#3: Minority Serving Institution Grant
Eligible high-need students attending Minority Serving Institution (MSIs) may qualify for this grant based on their Student Aid Index (SAI) and funds available. Students can receive up to $2,000 off their program fees.
