Semester in Seville

By: Rachel Higgins Camacho

Hola! My name is Rachel Higgins Camacho and currently I am studying in Seville, Spain. As my semester is coming to the end, all I have to say is, if you are even slightly thinking about studying abroad, this is your sign, GO FOR IT!

This city specifically was the perfect match for me. Seville is the fourth largest city in all of Spain, and as scary and big as it seemed the first day I landed and moved in, as time goes by, unconsciously, you start to adapt and make your host city your new home.

Seville is a perfect match for people who want to be immersed into Spanish culture, want to learn about history that is not only about Spain but also about the whole world, and want a great balance between a fun social life but also some laid-back “me-time”. Tapas, flamenco, warm climates, and its people effortlessly blend that is perfect for an international student.

With this, everything you hear and see about parties in Spain is true. Spaniards stay up until sunrise. If you even take a stroll around 10 pm on weekdays, you have high chances of seeing kids playing in parks still, restaurants and bars are filled with people, and everyone is outside socializing, which is a complete culture shock coming from a country where that wouldn't even be thought of during a weekday. Protip, check if the place you want to have dinner at is open when you go because many restaurants don’t even open until 8-8:30pm.

As for the night life, I loved it! There’s a little bit of everything for everyone. There are plenty of rooftop bars with a chill vibe and lots to see from above, bars along the river that you can enjoy a drink while watching boats pass by the river and gorgeous sunsets, bars which turn into clubs as the night goes on, and a ton of nightclubs all around the city with very different types of music, people, and atmosphere. The best part is exploring throughout the semester what vibe you like most and then finding your perfect place that you can make “yours”. All the times I have gone out whether it be bar hopping, clubbing, or just even late night strolls, I have felt extremely safe, comfortable, and immersed. Even if you don’t drink, there are a ton of options of things to do to feel included in the nightlife; No one is left out in this amazing city!

Please, if you go to Seville, even just to visit, experience at least one night being out and about and taking everything in. It’s so much fun and so worth the tiredness the next day! Below I will put some recommendations of places to go!
