Bowl of naengmyeon with toppings

Dish #1: Naengmyeon

Like many others new to Korean cuisine, when I first heard of this dish which directly translates to “cold noodles” I was definitely suspicious. All the noodles I'd had prior to this dish are best served hot. But don't let your concerns about its temperature throw you off from trying it! This dish has a refreshing savory and sweet flavor that's perfect for the hotter days in Seoul(which has been many days during my time here) And honestly, I still find myself eyeing it on the menu as the weather is finally starting to cool down. It's a staple korean dish that I haven't had a bad version of yet but some places do make it better than others. Some of the yummiest and most traditional tasting Naengmyon I've had in Korea was in Hongdae!

Dish #2: Kimchi Jjigae

One thing about Kimchi Jjigae is that it's gonna hit the spot every timeee! And while the name indicates only the kimchi in the dish, many places load their Jjigae with protein like pork, beef, or tofu! It tends to be a spicier dish but some places let you customize your spice level so you can opt for a milder version.  However, I have a higher spice tolerance so I tend to get my dishes in the level right above Shin Ramyun spice level. I love how filling and comforting this dish is. It never fails to warm me up and calm me down after a long day of classes and exploring the city!

P.s It's kind of funny that my two favorite korean dishes are on polar opposite ends of the temperature/spice spectrum

abiko curry and rice and cutlet

Bonus: Abiko Curry

I know what you're thinking: “Isn't this a Japanese curry place? What do you mean  it's been a go to dish for you in Korea?” Listen: this spot ALWAYS HITS! I remember the first day I tried it, I'd gone with a friend just to check it out because we didn't want to travel too far for lunch. We were back that same day for dinner with more friends! Theres an Abiko Curry a 2-3 minute walk from SK Global House/International House which makes it super convenient and it's also incredibly delicious! The curry is always rich in flavor, and the cutlets are always amazingly crispy! I find myself if Abiko multiple times a week some weeks which makes it a great go-to eat for sure in my books.
