Benefits of Studying Abroad in Berlin, Germany
By: Camryn Epstein
I am currently studying in Berlin, Germany, and I attend Gettysburg College. I really never thought I was going to end up studying in Germany because it is not as popular of a location at my school, but it has been one of the best decisions I have made. Berlin has been such an amazing place to study in for many reasons.
I have never lived in a city, and I have learned to love it so much. Berlin is a huge city, and it has so much to do - a variety of great food, people, coffee shops, museums, markets. The list could go on and on. Even though it is such a big city, getting around is easy. That is one of the skills I have learned by being here - the ability to use an amazing public transportation system.
I come from a town that doesn’t really have much public transportation, and the college I go to has such a small campus that it is unnecessary, so this was a great life skill I was able to learn, especially because I want to live in a city in the future. Another great quality about studying in Berlin is the ability to travel throughout Europe so easily. Flights to get to many different countries have been reasonably priced due to Berlin’s great location in Europe.
By the end of my four months in Berlin, I will have traveled to a total of eight different countries and many, many more cities than that. This is also due to the fact that the Berlin program is a little longer than most. Many study abroad programs are 3 months, but Berlin is 4 months long. This may seem like a long time but trying to fit seeing many different countries in just a few months is a difficult task. This extra time has allowed my friends and I to see a couple more places than we would have thought we would have been able to.
This has been such a great opportunity to not only meet people from all over the US in our program, but we have had such amazing relationships with professors from all over the world. It is great to hear about their outlook on the experience since most of them are very well traveled and are happy to help with anything. Berlin was a place that I was not expecting, but I have absolutely loved every moment of being here!
