CIEE is leading the charge in breaking down curriculum barriers to ensure every student – regardless of academic major and background – will be able to study abroad anywhere in the world and enroll in coursework that ensures on-time graduation at their home institution. To overcome the three biggest barriers to studying abroad – cost, curriculum, and culture – we are committed to expanding our programming and access through several distinct initiatives: A comprehensive global STEM portfolio, our new partnership with ASU Online, and our comprehensive international internship portfolio.
Our expanded offerings, detailed below, provide scores of new program options for students from every institution and academic major to study in CIEE’s 40+ incredible locations worldwide. From multi-disciplinary programs enhanced with new elevated “STEM Inside” offerings to a suite of CIEE Engineering, Technology, and Sciences programs – and much more – CIEE has something for everyone.

CIEE Expands STEM Study Abroad Programs to Support All STEM Majors
For decades, CIEE has been the leader in offering specialized STEM programs, with scores of place-based, STEM-focused programs offered around the world. We will continue to support and expand this portfolio with two additional program options for STEM majors – CIEE’s Engineering, Technology, and Sciences (CIEE ETS) and CIEE’s “STEM Inside” programs.
CIEE Engineering, Technology, and Sciences Programs
Beginning fall 2025, CIEE will launch our new CIEE ETS programs in 31 locations across CIEE’s global network. This program model allows students to take one or more courses in science, technology, engineering, or math from some combination of 1) direct enroll courses at one of our international host institutions, 2) CIEE’s local course offerings, or 3) ASU’s online courses. CIEE ETS programs are intentionally designed to offer students enriching STEM-related co-curricular and extracurricular activities, including internships, research projects, company visits, field trips, and guest lectures.
CIEE “STEM Inside” Semester In and Open Campus Block Programs
To meet the needs of all STEM majors, 130+ existing CIEE Semester In, Open Campus Block, and Arts + Sciences programs now have hundreds of new and enhanced STEM courses, with a special focus on more labs and higher-level courses. These new courses are delivered by our international partner institutions and CIEE’s English-speaking professors. Additionally, at schools that allow online credit, students may enroll in more than 1,000 online STEM courses delivered by ASU across all CIEE’s 40+ locations.
Between CIEE’s “STEM Inside” programs and CIEE’s Engineering, Technology, and Sciences programs, all STEM majors will find a CIEE Study Abroad program that matches their academic needs, professional goals, and personal interests.

CIEE Partners with Arizona State University to Augment Coursework with Online Learning
CIEE and Arizona State University (ASU) have joined forces to ensure that every student can study abroad wherever they most desire and still complete the coursework needed to stay on track for graduation by augmenting their curriculums with courses delivered 100% online and asynchronously by ASU. Beginning January 2025, students will be able to enroll in more than 3,000 in-demand college courses across all major areas of study, including STEM, business, entrepreneurship, healthcare, education, social sciences, environmental sustainability, and more – at no additional cost.
The partnership between CIEE and ASU will transform international learning opportunities for students at America’s leading colleges and universities by providing more options and flexibility and eliminating curriculum barriers at institutions that accept online credits. ASU’s online courses are accredited by the most prestigious accrediting organizations and are taught by ASU’s full-time faculty that teach the course in-person.
Together, CIEE and ASU are leading change in study abroad to ensure that all students, regardless of their academic course requirements, have the opportunity to embrace the transformational experience of study abroad.
