Holidays and Events

Spain is home to some of the most amazing events, festivals, and holidays in the world. The Spanish people have really perfected understanding how to celebrate an event. Not only do you feel the rich culture and history behind what the people are celebrating, but also how connected everyone is. Since moving to Madrid to teach English, I have been able to experience multiple different holidays, festivals, and events that have allowed me to not only integrate into Spanish life, but also learn more about it as well. Here are a few of my favorite events I have attended in the past year.

Christmas Markets

Everyone knows that Christmas markets in Europe are amazing, but Spain takes them to a whole new level. Attending multiple Christmas markets is a must in Madrid. From silly little ornaments, clothing, and amazing sweet treats, you can find anything and everything at these markets. I even had the amazing opportunity to attend the lighting of the Christmas tree in Sol, one of the busiest and most popular areas of Madrid. These markets are really something you can’t miss out on!

San Isidro Festival

San Isidro is definitely my favorite festival that is celebrated in Madrid. Boys and Girls dress up in traditional clothing, perform dances together in the street, and everyone gathers at San Isidro Park to celebrate with games, rides, and delicious food. While they are all amazing and fun, this festival definitely taught me a lot about Spanish culture, life, and history. We even celebrated at the elementary school I teach at!

Concerts and The Football Stadium

One of the best ways to experience Spanish passion is by going to the football stadium. There are multiple ways to do this. You can go on a tour, go to a concert being held there, or do one of the most popular options, attend a football match. The stadium is huge, and as soon as you enter, you can feel the love and enthusiasm for Spanish football. While I have not attended a football match, I did attend a concert, and even then I could imagine and envision how intense football matches might get inside.
