Democracy at Work: CIEE's First Annual International Exchange Conference
The inaugural International Exchange Conference (IEC), hosted by CIEE in Washington, D.C., was a triumphant gathering celebrating the power of international exchange. With over 200 attendees—from employers and program alumni to high school host families and BridgeUSA supporters—this event marked a milestone in advancing the mission of the U.S. Department of State’s BridgeUSA program and the role of cultural exchange in public diplomacy.
A Gathering of Allies in Public Diplomacy
The theme, "Democracy at Work," set the tone for a conference rich in camaraderie and collective purpose. The IEC provided a unique opportunity to meet and engage with our inspiring CIEE BridgeUSA participants and alumni. These individuals, each embodying the values of cultural exchange, came together with stakeholders committed to BridgeUSA's transformative impact. The final dinner and awards ceremony epitomized this shared dedication, uniting a diverse community around the core mission of promoting cultural understanding and global goodwill.
The Big Why: BridgeUSA as a Pillar of Diplomacy
The conference started with “The Big Why” panel, an insightful discussion about BridgeUSA’s significance in U.S. public diplomacy, economic prosperity, and national security. Panelists—including Rebecca Pasini, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Private Sector Exchange at the U.S. Department of State; Jon Baselice, Vice President of Immigration Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and Frank Taylor, President of FXTaylor Associates—highlighted the far-reaching effects of the program. The discussion reinforced how BridgeUSA acts as a bridge, connecting cultures and fostering a stronger, more interconnected world.
Honoring Exceptional Contributions: The “Democracy at Work” Awards
A highlight of the IEC was the awards ceremony, where we honored the invaluable contributions of industry professionals and BridgeUSA supporters. Special recognition went to Lara Turnbull, a BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel participant from New Zealand, who won CIEE’s inaugural “Democracy at Work” video contest. Her moving video celebrated the importance of empathy and connection in cross-cultural exchanges, stating, “Deciding to go on an international exchange through the BridgeUSA program was a very daunting experience, but if you're always afraid to take the first step, you always stay in the same spot.” Lara’s story inspired all of us to continue supporting these life-changing experiences.
