At last the reemergence of study abroad seems upon us after what may have been the hardest year anyone can remember. Throughout the pandemic, with judicious choices about where and how to operate, CIEE supported more than 3,800 students on international programs with minimal health-related incidents. Now, with all college students eligible for vaccination and an improving health and safety outlook in many countries, we are keenly optimistic that our mission to connect people and cultures can regain the momentum we had prior to the pandemic.

We owe special acknowledgement to those schools who sent students abroad with us this academic year. It is with renewed resolve that CIEE commits to being a trusted partner, creating dynamic, innovative programs that support your needs and expanding access to international experiences for a diverse community of students and future leaders.

CIEE Fall 2021 Portfolio

This fall, CIEE is proud to offer 57 programs in 19 cities across the world. You can see a list of all active programs on our Fall 2021 webpage. We will continue to offer both students and advisors opportunities to connect directly with center staff who can provide additional details and answer questions about life and academics onsite.

Students may still apply for select programs until June 1 and even later for several programs. See our Deadlines page for a list of programs and all active programs on the Fall 2021 webpage.

As a reminder, CIEE is not currently mandating a Covid vaccine for participation. However, we strongly urge all students to arrive on program fully vaccinated. There are countless personal, societal and experiential reasons to do so. Additionally, we may be able to assist with logistically if vaccinated students should documentation be requested while on program. Please visit our Vaccine FAQ page for additional details and our COVID-19 Guidelines which are currently in operation on all programs. Both pages will be updated regularly.

CIEE January 2022 Portfolio

January programs – cancelled in 2021 due to the pandemic – are set to return with 15 programs across 14 countries. Students who missed their opportunity last year can choose from an array of courses including Food, Nutrition and Culture at our stunning Rome Center to the ever-popular Japanese Manga and Art at one of our newest sites, Kyoto.

You can find an updated program list on our January 2022 page. Each program page has syllabi posted to explore ways to shake off the inevitable winter blahs.

CIEE Spring 2022 Portfolio

Spring 2022 looks to return in full force with 60 programs in 27 cities! This includes the return of Dublin and Rennes programs in Europe, as well as Buenos Aires, Gaborone, Rabat, Shanghai, St. Petersburg, and Sydney. Even with our application deadlines months away, we project nearly a full return to pre-pandemic levels.

You can find an updated program list on our spring 2022 page.

Virtual and In-Person Internships

Our virtual global internship programs offer opportunities in 20+ global cities and will be offered with start dates throughout the year. Further, we are excited by our new partnership with Hacker Exchange (HEX) and invite students to partake in the Virtual Global Innovation Internship which gives participants intensive start-up and new technology training before completing an 8-week or 12-week internship.

We also look forward to hosting students for in-person internships in Summer 2021. This summer we are set to operate in-person Summer Global Internship programs in seven cities across Europe and the Pacific Rim.

CIEE Program Assurance Advantage

All applicants to CIEE fall 2021 and spring 2022 study abroad and in-person global internship programs are protected by our Program Assurance Advantage, so students can feel confident confirming participation without incurring financial risk. This free benefit protects students' financial investment in the event CIEE must cancel an international program. If students choose to withdraw, or their institution requires them to withdraw, up to the day before the start of a program, CIEE program fees paid will be refunded.

Health, Safety, and Security Updates

Our Health, Safety, and Security team, led by Bill Bull, continues to adapt and modify our programs to mitigate risk of transmitting COVID-19 while on program. We are asking students traveling this summer to voluntarily disclose their vaccination status two weeks before arriving on program. This will assist in our ability to operate our programs more safely as well as provide logistical help if needed.

We await airline and national policies on vaccine requirements and expect many to require some form of testing, quarantine, or proof of vaccination. As a reminder, testing and quarantine for unvaccinated students is at their expense and not included in CIEE program fees.

Lastly, the realignment of Department of State Travel Advisories may have caused your institution some concern. We would like to highlight OSAC’s advisement that “…members should not necessarily view CDC THNs or Department of State Travel Advisories as a singular tripwire, evacuating staff or cutting programs the moment a level increases or restarting operations the moment they decrease”.

We will continue to treat DOS advisories of one of many important indicators, but we are relying on a more robust analysis when considering risk to study abroad participants. We will continue to publish the CIEE Health Risk Indicator (HRI) bi-weekly and invite all persons interested to sign up by emailing IR@ciee.org. The HRI assigns a data-driven score for all CIEE locations based on a variety of statistics from globally recognized agencies like Johns Hopkins University. It does not necessarily represent absolute level of risk, nor do certain numerical scores trigger a program cancellation or guarantee a program will run.
