Applications Now Open for the 2022 Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship

Students may now apply for the 2022 Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a fully funded leadership program for students of color to study abroad and explore strategies for promoting social justice, resolving conflict, and advancing peace.
In summer of 2022, the Fellows selected for this competitive award will spend four weeks in Ireland, following in the footsteps of Frederick Douglass. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs will co-sponsor the 2022 Frederick Douglass Global Fellows to continue the legacy project created to honor the 175th anniversary of the meeting between 27-year-old abolitionist Frederick Douglass and the Irish reformer Daniel O’Connell in Dublin in 1845.
Through visits across the country and an academic course entitled Leadership, Peace, and Conflict Resolution, Fellows will explore the life stories, leadership styles, and legacies of Frederick Douglass and Daniel O’Connell.
“Just as Frederick Douglass was transformed by his time abroad and returned to America ready to devote his life to agitating for positive change, so too will the Frederick Douglass Global Fellows return home inspired and prepared to be catalysts for positive change in their communities and in our world,” said James P. Pellow, president and CEO of CIEE.
Launched in 2017, the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was designed for students of color as part of CIEE’s commitment to open doors for all students from all backgrounds. Fellows will be chosen based on demonstrated leadership, effective communication, experience in agitating for positive change, and a commitment to cross-cultural respect and understanding. The application deadline is February 14, 2022.
In addition to funding the Frederick Douglass Global Fellows, CIEE will provide all eligible students who complete the fellowship application but are not selected as Fellows a $1,500 grant towards any CIEE summer 2022, fall 2022, or spring 2023 program. Known as the Frederick Douglass Scholars Grant, this award is matched by many colleges and universities, making an international education experience financially attainable for many more students from diverse backgrounds.
