Playing a Sport
Playing a sport in Germany can really help you integrate into your host community. I found that this was an easy way to meet people and make friends outside of school. Playing a sport also allows you to practice your language skills while still learning about German culture, outside of your host family and school. Although you may not play a sport in the United States, trying out a new sport in Germany can be very fun and helpful. You are able to learn new terminology and possibly develop a love for a new sport.
I decided to play soccer in Germany. After playing for many months, I have become very close with some of the girls. At first, I was really only friends with the girl who did an exchange to the United States. Although, with time, I was able to expand my friendships within the team. Being able to play on a soccer team gave me an easy place to speak German without people judging me.
Learning soccer terminology in German was very interesting. This is because the World Cup took place this year. This allowed me to talk with my classmates about what happened in the game the night before. I felt this really allowed me to connect with my classmates on a different level than I had before.
