Columbia, SC High School student receives “Globaleyes” scholarship for cultural awareness
Madison Matheus, a student at Dreher High School, has been chosen as a 2012 GLOBALEYES Scholar by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). As a GLOBALEYES Scholar, Matheus will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward her college tuition at American University.
Each year CIEE offers American high school students a chance to win college scholarships by submitting an essay on a topic related to cultural exchange.
Matheus won for her essay that provided an example of how exchanging ideas with someone from another culture— whether through a trip abroad, through interaction with an exchange student in the U.S., or through conversations with another member of the local community— has shifted her point of view.
CIEE developed the GLOBALEYES Scholarship as a way to promote the sharing of ideas, stories, and perspectives across cultures, which furthers the organization’s mission of providing valuable cultural exchange opportunities for students, professionals, and faculty both internationally and domestically.
