20 Hour Practicum FAQ
Your first time as a teacher in the classroom can feel daunting and that’s why our course includes a practicum component where you can get real life, hands-on experience before jumping in front of the class alone! Most teachers complete their practicum by working or volunteering in their local communities. These opportunities include observing a classroom, co-teaching, lead teaching, or private tutoring. Not sure how to set this up? Don’t worry! We’ll help you create a plan, from researching organizations, setting up practicum dates, and completing pre and post reflective work on your experiences.
No. All practicum hours must be completed after the 1st week of the CIEE TEFL course and completed within 30 days after the course ends. No prior teaching experience can be used to fulfill the practicum requirement.
Part of becoming a TEFL teacher is learning to be flexible in the classroom. Whether you are teaching in person or online, there are many different roles that you can try when completing your TEFL practicum hours. Here are a few examples:
- Observation
- Co-Teaching
- Lead Teaching
- Private Tutoring
In general, the student(s) must be (a) nonnative English speaker(s) with the intention to learn and improve English language ability and/or proficiency. Any teaching environment in which the learners are native English speakers will not count towards the CIEE TEFL practicum. That said, some universities, community colleges, and K-12 schools offer bilingual education programs including subjects such as math, reading, etc. as part of their bilingual education curriculum. As long as the students are nonnative English speakers, these subject-related classes can count towards your practicum.

Not all TEFL certification courses are created equal. Courses designed to help you reach your personal and professional goals will likely cost more than $1,000, but they offer several benefits:
Accreditation: Accreditation from a reputable organization, like ACCET, ensures that the course meets certain standards of quality and rigor.
Comprehensive instruction and support: Paid TEFL courses typically offer more comprehensive instruction and support than free courses. This may include access to experienced instructors, high-quality materials, and job placement assistance.
Recognition and respect from potential employers: Paid TEFL certificates are more likely to be recognized and respected by potential employers.
The CIEE 150-Hour TEFL course is priced competitively, offering high-quality instruction, comprehensive curriculum, and job support at a lower cost than many other TEFL courses of similar caliber.
The CIEE TEFL Certificate does not expire. It is a lifetime qualification that demonstrates your knowledge and skills in teaching English as a foreign language.
Some employers may prefer to hire TEFL teachers with more recent experience, so you may want to take a refresher course or volunteer to teach English to speakers of other languages in your community.
Be sure to research the requirements for TEFL teachers in the country where you want to teach, as some countries may have specific requirements, such as a certain amount of teaching experience.
The recommended timeline for starting a TEFL course depends on your individual needs and goals. However, here is a general guideline:
If you are planning to teach abroad: Begin your TEFL course at least 6 months prior to your intended departure date. This will give you enough time to complete the course, obtain your TEFL certificate, and find a teaching job.
If you are planning to teach English at home or online: Begin your TEFL course at least 3 months before you apply for a position. This will give you enough time to complete the course, obtain your TEFL certificate, and prepare your job search materials.
The TEFL practicum is a required period of supervised teaching practice that gives CIEE TEFL students the chance to gain hands-on experience teaching English to speakers of other languages.
The practicum is important because it helps aspiring TEFL teachers to develop their teaching skills and confidence before they start teaching professionally.
Hiring institutions value TEFL courses with a practicum component, so we made sure to include one in our CIEE 150-Hour TEFL course to help our students stand out from the competition.
