Job Description
Teachers in Morocco sign on for a full academic year of employment as a language instructor, from September to July. Your school will provide textbooks and instructions about learning objectives for your different classes, along with access to computers and printers. Day-to-day lesson planning will be up to you.
Compensation
Participants will earn 7,500 Moroccan dirhams per month, plus a monthly housing stipend of 1,500 dirhams. With the very low cost of essentials like food, transport, and phone service, that’s more than enough for a comfortable standard of living.
Your compensation will also include local health insurance, professional development activities, and an all-expenses-paid teacher’s conference within Morocco!
Schools and Schedules
CIEE partners with private centers specializing in language education. Founded by Americans, they are highly regarded as reputable schools and good employers within Morocco. They offer classes to both adults and students of all ages, although most of your students will be teenagers.
To offer classes to students after their regular school day is over, these language centers schedule most classes for evenings and weekends. All teachers get two days off per week, although they are not likely to be weekends and may not be consecutive.
Workload
You will be a lead teacher, responsible for lesson planning, grading, and running extracurricular activities. You can expect to work with classes of different ages: some adults and some as young as kindergarten age.
This is a full-time position, and you will spend 35-40 hours at school each week, with about half of that spent in the classroom and the rest taken up with meetings, action research and development, center projects, extracurriculars, special events, and prep time.
Each teacher will be responsible for running 1-3 hours of extracurricular activities per week. Past teachers have organized a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including theater productions, music clubs and performances, sports, public speaking events, debate teams, and cultural presentations. It’s a chance for you to draw on your own strengths and experiences!
Qualifications
There are a few simple requirements. You’ll make a great candidate if you have a sense of adventure, flexibility, cultural curiosity, and a desire to engage people to help them learn English.
The employer in Morocco looks for candidates who are independent, curious, and thrive in a changing environment.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in any field (awarded at least one year prior to departure)
- Native or fluent English speaker
- Currently enrolled in or completed a 150-Hour or 180-Hour CIEE TEFL Certificate course
- Age 58 or younger. Older teachers are ineligible for Moroccan work permits
- Citizenship in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand
- Experience living abroad strongly preferred, to ensure that you are ready to adapt to Moroccan culture
- Some paid or volunteer teaching experience required, to meet Moroccan gov’t requirements for foreign teachers
