The Destination
Budapest invites you to wander the streets, soaking in the historical art and architecture by day, and events, dining, and music by night. The Danube river divides the two sides of the city, Buda and Pest, so you will never be far from the water and river cruises are a popular activity. Budapest boasts an efficient network of metro lines, buses, and trams that make it easy to travel between neighborhoods. Teachers in Budapest enjoy the café culture, neighborhood bakeries with an array of local treats, and the famous thermal baths that are fed by dozens of hot springs.
Job Description
CIEE partners with two well-respected organizations in Budapest that run innovative English Language programs in local public schools. One of our partners places teachers in K-12 classrooms, and the other runs preschool and after-school programs at public schools. Once you sign up, we’ll ask which of these you prefer, then we will send your application to the corresponding partner for video hiring interviews.
All positions are full-time, with Monday-to-Friday schedules. You can expect 25-28 classroom teaching hours per week, with approximately 10-12 additional hours devoted to things like meetings, prep time, transition time, grading, special events, and supervising snack and recess.
K-12 Classroom Position Details
- Co-teach in public school classrooms alongside local instructors.
- Candidates with experience in math, science, and IT are especially encouraged to apply, since there are often opportunities to teach these subjects in addition to English Language.
- Salary is 445,000 HUF per month, after taxes.
Preschool and After-School Position Details
- Preschool classes (age 3-6) are co-taught with a local instructor, between 7:30 am and 1:00 pm.
- With after-school language enrichment classes, ages 6-10 are co-taught with a local instructor, and ages 11-14 are taught solo.
- Expect a mixed schedule of preschool and after-school classes totaling 28 classroom hours per week.
- Candidates with experience in storytelling, arts & crafts, sports, music, drama, STEM, and cooking are especially encouraged to apply.
- Salary is 445,000 HUF per month, after taxes
Other Benefits

Teachers have time off during school vacations and Hungarian national holidays.
The cost of living in Hungary is much lower than in the United States and your salary should easily cover normal living expenses. If you’re hoping to travel extensively during breaks, you should plan to bring additional funds.
Qualifications
There are a few simple requirements. These, plus a sense of adventure and a desire to cross cultural boundaries and engage with people eager to learn English, will make you a great candidate.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in any field
- Native-level English fluency
- Currently enrolled in or completed a 150-Hour or 180-Hour CIEE TEFL Certificate course
- Citizenship in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, or South Africa
On Your Resume, Include Relevant Experience Such As:
- Classroom teaching experience
- Non-classroom teaching experience: camp counselor, tutor, coach, etc.
- Drama, music, storytelling, sports
- IT or STEM experience
