Making Friends Abroad: Building Connections in Spain
In my local community in Spain, I found that simply starting conversations with people often led to meaningful connections. Back in New York, I was more introverted and only socialized when necessary, but moving to Spain showed me the importance of connecting with others to avoid loneliness. Spanish culture places a strong emphasis on socializing, so don’t hesitate to reach out and engage with those around you.
In the school setting, building relationships with fellow teachers was essential. Lean on them for support, ask questions, and show genuine interest in their experiences. They’re usually just as eager to engage with you as you are to learn from them. These connections not only help you feel more integrated but also enrich your experience in Spain.
Beyond the school community, I found it invaluable to immerse myself in Facebook groups and WhatsApp communities for expats. Spain is home to a diverse range of people from around the world, and these groups were instrumental in helping me connect with amazing individuals. Whether you're looking for local advice or trying to make new friends, these online communities offer a wealth of support and opportunities.
Using apps like Meetup can also be a fantastic way to connect with people who share similar hobbies and interests. Additionally, staying in hostels during your travels provides a great opportunity to meet people, as the dormitory-style accommodations encourage social interaction. Hostels often host events like pub crawls, socializing hours, and walking tours, making it easier to meet fellow travelers.
Don’t be afraid to use apps like Bumble to expand your social circle. Many of the friends I made lived in vibrant cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Málaga, which gave me the chance to explore these fantastic places and strengthen my connections.
