If you’re looking to explore more of Spain outside of Madrid, the beautiful city of Toledo is the perfect day trip. A quick 50 minute bus ride will drop you off in the heart of the former Spanish capital, where there’s a special history of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic tradition. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and check the weather before! Here were some of my favorite parts of the day!

Streets of Toledo

1. Catedral Primada de Toledo

One of the most breathtaking churches I’ve visited. We purchased our tickets the night before for €12.00 from their official site. The cathedral was originally built in the 1200s and being surrounded by centuries old artworks and artifacts was awe-inspiring.

2. Toledo in Motion

A quick and entertaining 15 minute movie about Toledo’s landscape, monuments, and history from the Romans to the Islamic Al-Andalusia. Would recommend doing it early in the day so you understand more about the environment around you! The tickets were only €3.50 and we were able to buy them on-site.

3. Lunch with a View

Recommended by another CIEE participant, the Azotea restaurant at the top of the Carlos Hotel was a unique spot to take a break, have a drink, and eat some traditional Spanish dishes, all while taking in the spectacular view of the city. We were able to make a lunch reservation through their official website and being a Type A person, this is my personal recommendation. If there’s ever an opportunity to drink vermout and eat pickles while soaking up the sunshine, count me in.

4. Local Pottery Shop

During my travels I’ve been attempting to collect various knick knacks, doodads, and trinkets to bring back to my loved ones at home (and some to keep for myself too, of course). The owners of the Cerámica J Serrano pottery shop were incredibly kind and had so much to offer. The handmade authentic pieces were gorgeous, and I left with a fun butter dish that I’m excited to show off the next time I host my friends over for dinner.

I loved my day in Toledo and I especially loved how easy it was to travel there and learn more Spanish history. I would definitely recommend visiting the city to anyone who will be living in Madrid for a significant amount of time.
