Black in Spain: A Guide for Hair Care and Cultural Adaptation
Pack All Hair Essentials
Before heading to Spain, make sure to purchase and pack all your hair products and tools. In smaller cities like Castilla y Leon, it can be challenging to find items for afro-textured hair. Bring everything you need: conditioners, shampoos, heat protectants, moisturizers, oils, and hot tools such as hot combs and blow dryers. For short-term programs, consider a protective style to simplify your routine.
Be Open-Minded About Hair Care
Expect that finding hair maintenance services tailored to afro-textured hair may be difficult, particularly outside of large cities like Madrid or Barcelona. In smaller regions, there may be limited familiarity with afro hair, so approach conversations about your hair with patience and a willingness to educate others.
Navigating Curiosity and Questions
People, including students, may show interest in your hair texture, whether you have an afro, curls, or braids. This curiosity is often due to the rarity of seeing such hair types. Use this as an opportunity to share knowledge and educate others about hair care and maintenance.
Finding Hair Services
During my stay in Spain, I visited a salon in Valladolid. It wasn't the most ideal experience, as the stylist admitted she was not used to servicing afro hair. While her services did the job for the time being, I found it easier to manage my hair on my own until I returned to the US. If you don’t know how to do basic styles yourself, please learn before you go. Based on advice from friends, traveling to Madrid is the best option for proper hair services. The La Latina area is known for its Dominican salons, African braiding shops, and beauty supply stores where you can find products and services suited to your needs.
With these tips, you'll be better prepared to manage your hair and navigate cultural differences while enjoying your time in Spain.
